I can't believe w/ two boys and a 7 year old that we are just making our first visit to the ER. God has truly been gracious to us in protecting our children over the years.
However, our first visit is now in the books. Literally. The financial books. HA! ; )
Emma Claire was out exploring like she loves to do when GG comes to town but this time she didn't wear the proper shoes which landed us with a fall and a busted knee.
At the end of our street the concrete company that pours the driveways have been dumping their leftover mixture making big concrete piles. An awesome playground of exploration for children, but not the safest of spots either.
Emma Claire was climbing on top of the rocks when the flip-flops she was wearing slipped and she came right down on a sharp rock and cut her knee. There was so much blood. Oh, so much blood.
While GG took care of putting a compress on her knee I quickly called our pediatrician and he said the best thing to do was to take her straight to the WakeMed Children's ER.
I am SO thankful that we did because they were AWESOME. They saw us quickly and were wonderful with Emma Claire. And so attentive. The staff picked up on and took notes of each thing she said. They would come by and say things like 'I heard that your favorite color was purple. Would you like me to get you a purple popsicle?'. Just so personable and made her feel much more at ease.
When the nurses came in to talk with Emma Claire and explain what all was happening we all got a good laugh. She was trying to talk to her very delicately about what was going on. Here is how it went:
Nurse: "Now we have certain rules here in our ER. First, mom goes everywhere you go. You are never taken away from mom. Second, we will never do anything to you without explaining it to you first. Third, you will always get a popsicle as a treat. Now, sometimes when we have really bad boo-boo's we have to tie them up with magic strings..."
Emma Claire: "You mean STITCHES?!?" (followed by big crocodile tears)
In which everyone started chuckling under their breathe because she wasn't falling for the sugar coating.
Nurse: "Yes, I mean stiches, BUT we have this special magic cream that we can rub on your leg that makes it tickle and you won't feel a thing."
Emma Claire: "You mean your gonna make it NUMB?!?!"
In which one of the other nurses busts out laughing and said "She's not falling for it, you're not going get anything past her!"
Love my girl but she is very literal. :0
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.
One thing I liked about them is that they did things in teams and not one doctor made all the calls. The first team that came in to see us said she needed 4 to 5 stitches which upset Emma Claire because she was afraid it was going to hurt. Then a second team came in to get a second opinion and decided that they thought they could do the Dura Bond (super glue ; ) because it wasn't directly on the joint and wouldn't easily pull back apart. After that Emma Claire was all smiles and very talkative with the staff! She was thrilled that she didn't have to get stitches or 'magic strings' as they called them.
The doctors couldn't believe that this was our first visit to the ER having three kiddos. Her response was, "well, you'll be back, you have boys!" ; )
Doesn't it look awesome! They did such a fantastic job.
This shoe looks like it's from a crime scene. We decided it was better to toss them in the trash and just get new shoes. : )
Yes, she is back up on top of that rock, Mom. She is just showing us where she fell. Trust me. We won't be back on them!
We are so thankful for God's protection for our sweet girl. It could have always been worse. The people at WakeMed Children's were awesome and I'm sure she will be up in running in just a few days!
